Lent Initiative
Join the Lent Journey: A Community Experiment in Kindness
At Feed My Sheep, we are always looking for ways to bring the community together, to encourage acts of kindness, and to, of course, feed those who are hungry physically, spiritually and emotionally (which includes ourselves!) This Lent season, we are launching something new—an experiment in communal generosity, personal growth, and shared experiences. Whether or not you celebrate or are familiar with Lent, this is an invitation to join us on a journey that could impact literally tens of thousands of lives.
What is Lent?
Lent is a season in the Christian tradition that leads up to Easter. It is a time of reflection, sacrifice, and preparation, modeled after the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness. Traditionally, people observe Lent by giving up something—chocolate, caffeine, social media—or by adding a new spiritual discipline, such as daily prayer or Bible reading.
While Lent is commonly associated with Catholic and some Protestant traditions, our goal is to make this journey accessible to anyone, regardless of background or beliefs. The focus is not on religious obligation but on fostering a spirit of selflessness, growth, and community engagement.
A Different Kind of Lent
Starting March 5th, Feed My Sheep will share daily challenges on our social media platforms. Each day, there will be an action you can take—something to give up, something to add, or something to do for others. These challenges will be simple, meaningful, and designed to fit into daily life.
Some examples may include:
- **Reflection and Nature:** Take time to watch a sunset in silence and appreciate its beauty.
- **Acts of Kindness:** Pay for a stranger’s meal or coffee at a drive-thru.
- **Reconnection:** Reach out to a loved one you haven’t spoken to in a while.
- **Service:** Deliver flowers to a resident in an assisted living home.
- **Forgiveness:** Extend grace to someone or seek reconciliation in a broken relationship.
Imagine what could happen if even a small fraction of us in Temple, Texas and the surrounding community participated in these small acts together. What if kindness became a habit, not just for 40 days, but beyond? What if a movement started right here in our community and spread far beyond this area?
Why Are We Doing This?
This initiative isn’t about making Feed My Sheep look good. It’s not about checking a religious box. It’s about recognizing that people matter. Every person. Every act of kindness. Every moment of reflection. Together, these can add up to something bigger than ourselves.
Even if only a few people fully commit to this journey, it will still be worth it. But what if hundreds or even thousands joined in? The ripple effect of kindness, generosity, and intentionality could transform not just individuals, but an entire community.
How to Get Involved
1. Follow Us on Social Media: Every morning, we’ll post the day’s challenge on Facebook and Instagram.
2. Commit to the Journey: Engage with the challenges in a way that fits your life.
3. Share Your Experience: We’ll be sharing our experiences, thoughts and impact in response to our individual participation with each challenge in the comments of the social media posts, and we encourage you to do the same. If something impacts you, let others know! Post about it, encourage others, and celebrate the good happening around us.
We hope this journey will be profoundly beautiful, an opportunity for all of us to walk together in a shared mission of kindness and growth. Whether you are a person of faith or not, whether you have observed Lent before or this is new to you—this journey is for everyone.
The journey begins March 5th. Let’s make a difference together!
